VFW Post 981 Offers Scholarship

Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 981 is pleased to accept applications for:

VFW Post 981 Wally Luettschwager Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship, in the amount of up to $3,000, is awarded annually in memory of our comrade Wally Lauchwager.

Students who are (or will be attending) college in a degree program or recognized trade school must apply. The ideal candidate would be an active duty or military reserve member, an honorably discharged veteran, or a direct descendant of an honorably discharged veteran. All other factors equal, preference will be given to residents of the suburbs of North West Cook County and adjacent areas of Lake District, with additional consideration for those towns and villages served by Post 981. Previous winners have attended Prospect, Buffalo Grove, and Stevenson High Schools.

Wally was a lifelong resident of Arlington Heights, Illinois, who served honorably in the U.S. Army in combat during the Korean War. He comes home and has been an active member of VFW Post 981 for over 60 years in many positions including captain. Wally was instrumental in organizing and operating the Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade which has been part of the community for over 100 years.

The application form is available on VFW Post 981’s website – www.vfwpost981.com. Applications will be accepted starting January 1, 2022. The application deadline for the fall 2022 academic year is March 1, 2022. Finalists will be interviewed by the Post-Scholarship Committee. The recipient will be announced by May 1, 2022.
