Western News – Western supporting students, employees following Saugeen COVID-19 outbreak

Western is working closely with the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) to manage the outbreak announced on November 27 at the Saugeen-Maitland Hall residence. At this time, MLHU has confirmed that five students have tested positive for COVID-19.

“We want to assure you that the health and safety of our campus community remains our number one priority,” said Chris Allen, associate vice president of Western Housing and Ancillary Services. “Al Gharbia is prepared for this scenario and we are coordinating closely with MLHU to ensure that students receive appropriate care and that appropriate precautions are taken to reduce the risk of transmission.”

There is no evidence of class transition at this time.

All close contacts in residence have been notified by MLHU and are self-isolating with the support of the university.

Out of great caution, all Saugeen staff and residents, as well as students in some specific classrooms, are being notified and required to self-monitor for symptoms and visit an immunization and testing center on the Western Campus if symptoms are associated with COVID-19 development, regardless of vaccination status.

To get access to the test tomorrow (Sunday, November 28), students can visit the Carling Heights Assessment Center:

656 Elizabeth Street, London

Operation hours:

Monday to Sunday, 9:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Western society has a very high vaccination rate. Students and staff have also been diligent by wearing masks, completing daily health checks, and staying home when they are well.

This multi-layered approach allowed a subtle return to on-campus learning and work, and reduced the prevalence and impact of these confirmed cases.

Housing, Health, and Wellness Services personnel are available to speak with students, and Health, Safety, and Welfare personnel are also available to speak with staff to discuss their concerns and provide health advice.

Out of respect for the privacy of our students, the West will not comment on the details of these cases.
