YPBW seeks scholarship applicants | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN — The board of the Youngstown Business and Professional Women is seeking applicants for its Dr. Anne McMahon Scholarship.

Youngstown State University women students who have completed their freshman year and are enrolled at YSU at the undergraduate or graduate level are encouraged to apply for the $1,000 scholarship. A minimum 3.0 GPA is a requirement and financial need may be considered.

Applicants must submit an application, three letters of reference, a copy of their current transcript and an essay stating reasons for requesting the scholarship. Funds are payable to the individual and can be used for non-tuition-related expenses such as study abroad programs.

A panel made up of YBPW members will select the winners.

“The YBPW seeks to promote the leadership and success of women in the Youngstown area,” says YBPW Scholarship Chair Dee McFarland. To support those goals, we provide annual scholarship funds to assist women seeking to enhance their career and leadership achievements through college education. These young women are our future.”

The deadline for scholarship applicants is March 15. The winners will be contacted by the end of April and presented the award at the YBPW May business meeting. They will be celebrated once again as part of the organization’s annual Women of the Year award dinner in October at the Lake Club in Poland.

Applications are available via theYSU Foundation website. For more information, contact ybpwboard1@gmail.com. YBPW has provided a scholarship through the YSU Foundation since 2012. It was named in honor of member and YSU management professor Dr. Anne McMahon in recognition of her dedication to her students and the YBPW organization.

Dr. McMahon’s foresight of the changing demographics in the workplace and the impact it would have on human resources, employee relations and profits motivated her to create a partnership between YSU and YBPW that would create a platform for programs and collaboration for more than 20 years.

Thanks to vigorous fundraising efforts, this scholarship reached perpetuity status within the YSU Foundation in 2018.

YBPW was established in 1920 and is affiliated with the Ohio BPW and BPW Foundation. The goal of YBPW is to empower women personally, professionally, and politically. In addition, members strive toward the common goal of economic and workplace equity for working women. YBPW meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month and supports women’s causes throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
